Selecting and setting up hearing aids
The hearing aid fitting process involves selecting an appropriate hearing aid model and precisely adjusting it according to the patient’s audiogram. The process begins with choosing basic models whose maximum output level and amplification characteristics correspond to the degree of hearing loss and the configuration of the audiogram.
Hearing aid fitting helps people with hearing impairment and severe hearing loss improve their quality of life and maintain or develop their ability to communicate with others.
Purchasing a hearing aid is only the first step toward restoring hearing function. You may need time to get used to the device. The most important factors during this period are patience and motivation.
A mandatory part of the hearing aid fitting process is the production of a custom ear mold. The ear mold ensures better fixation of the hearing aid behind the ear and provides more efficient transmission of amplified sound from the hearing aid to the eardrum. A custom ear mold is made based on an impression of the patient’s ear (detailed information can be found in the section “Custom Ear Mold Manufacturing”).
The selection and adjustment of a hearing aid follow a step-by-step process:
• The first appointment begins with a consultation between the specialist and the patient. The goal is to determine the history of hearing loss, any previous experience with hearing aids, and to gather information about the patient’s lifestyle (professional activity, habits, hobbies).
• Based on the results of the audiogram (pure-tone and speech audiometry), the specialist offers the patient several hearing aid models capable of compensating for the specific hearing loss.
• After an initial adjustment, the patient selects the most suitable option based on the following criteria: speech intelligibility, natural sound quality, whether the patient’s own voice sounds natural, the appearance and size of the device, and, of course, the cost.
• After selecting and adjusting the hearing aid, the hearing care professional sends it for the production of a custom ear mold.
• The patient then shares their impressions with the specialist (comfort while wearing the hearing aid, perception of their own voice, presence of any background noise, clarity of speech, etc.). The first fitting is rarely optimal or final.
• The patient receives full instructions on how to use the hearing aid, how to care for the ear mold, and a step-by-step adaptation plan.
• For first-time users, an adaptation program is provided, which involves gradually increasing the sound level as the patient becomes accustomed to the hearing aid.
High-quality hearing correction requires several fitting sessions with a hearing care professional. Follow-up adjustments are performed as needed.
A hearing care professional will help you select a hearing aid tailored to your hearing characteristics and personal preferences.
