Making custom ear molds

individvkl 1A custom ear mold, whether a solid or soft one, is an integral part of the hearing aid. Up to 60% of fitting success depends on a correctly chosen and properly made custom ear mold. Without a custom mold, even the most advanced high-tech hearing aid that has been properly selected and tuned up, would not be able to solve the problem of a person with impaired hearing in an efficient way.
High-quality custom ear molds are the prerequisite and the key to the efficiency of fitting a person with hearing aids; as to fitting children, custom ear molds are mandatory. Effectively fitting a patient with hearing aids depends on the size, shape and placement of the custom ear mold within the external acoustic meatus.
The custom ear mold is made using an impression of each patient’s external acoustic meatus, mirrors all its anatomic features and facilitates:
- elimination of feedback (“hissing noise”) in the device, which is especially critical when the powerful hearing aids are required;
- optimum (with minimum loss) transmission of the sound amplified by the device to the drum membrane;
- securely latching the device behind the ear;
- reducing skin stress;
- “aeration” of the ear and prevention of the accumulation of condensate, if the mold is equipped with a vent (for hearing loss up to 60 dB).
As the child grows and the size of their external ear changes, the custom ear mold must be replaced at least every 6 months.
The custom ear molds require regular hygiene care and monitoring. Our custom ear mold maker recommends to clean your ear molds regularly. It is sufficient to clean them once or twice a week. It is required to wash the mold and the connecting tube in warm running water. Prior to reattaching the tube and the ear mold to the hearing aid, please make sure that they are absolutely dry. At the reception desk of the audiology department, patients can also purchase dedicated products to care for hearing aids and molds. Regular cleaning, washing and drying of the custom ear mold using special disinfectants allows to maximize their life span and will ultimately have a positive effect on the operation of the hearing aid.
The custom ear mold maker provides the following services:
- getting a cast;
- making the custom ear molds;
- replacement of the tubes;
- replacement of the mold hook;
- cleaning the ear molds.
