Parents’ contribution to their child’s treatment and how to avoid adverse effects developing from taking medication?

Parents need to adhere to the following rules:

- Be closely in touch with the treating physician
- Be adamant about the child’s taking the prescribed medication
- Mandatorily journal seizures on a daily basis
- Strictly adhere to the plan of doctor’s visits
- Avoid factors that may contribute to seizure development (maintain healthy sleep and avoid alcohol consumption)

Never cancel antiepileptic drugs without consulting with the treating physician, which, if done, may often lead to a deterioration of the patient’s seizure situation, at times with grave consequences

How to avoid adverse effects developing from taking medication:

- Conducting a full clinical and laboratory screening before commencement of treatment
- Conducting follow-up of clinical and laboratory parameters during treatment
- Monitoring the concentration of the antiepileptic drug in the blood
- Being closely in touch with the treating physician
- Strictly adhering to the doctor’s treatment plan
- Epilepsy and work-related activity
